Gastrectomy, the removal of the stomach, is often used to treat stomach cancer and may be subtotal or total.
In subtotal gastrectomy, only the diseased portion of the stomach and surrounding lymph nodes and tissues are removed.
In total gastrectomy, the entire stomach is removed, along with nearby lymph nodes and portions of the small intestine, esophagus, and spleen.
