At-Home Neurofeedback Training
Harbin Clinic Psychology offers two at-home neurofeedback training devices – the Techneruo headset and the Narbis glasses.
Techneruo
Techneuro is a headset, which the patient wears while playing a game or watching a video on a tablet.
How It Works
The patient either controls a character in a video game or watches a video. When the patient is focused, the character in the game runs faster. This gives the patient instant feedback and encourages them to pay attention to keep the character moving faster.
When the patient’s mind starts wandering, the character slows down, forcing the patient to pay attention again to speed the character up.
If the patient chooses to watch videos instead, when the patient’s attention wanders – the video goes dark.
Narbis
Narbis is a pair of glasses the patient wears while reading a book, doing homework or watching a movie. This device can be used either at home or in the office.
How It Works
Narbis uses sensors to track your brain activity. These signals are sent to the glasses’ lenses.
When the patient is focused on the activity, the lenses are clear allowing the patient to see. When the patient loses focus, the lenses darken. The patient gets instant feedback, encouraging them to focus on their activity.
The patient can use this device at home, and the doctor can monitor the patients’ brain activity and progress remotely. The patient may also choose to do this option in the office.
The home option allows the patient to train for four to eight weeks.
Costs
Both the Technuero and Narbis programs cost $1,080 for two months, this price includes a fee of $400 a month for leasing the equipment and a monthly monitoring fee of $140, plus a $250 security deposit for the equipment.
The Narbis program also offers a four-week treatment plan costing $540. This price includes the rental fee of $100 per week and $35 fee per week for monitoring.
“Neurofeedback is a fun, painless way to help people with attention issues,” Dr. Frank Harbin says. “When it works, for most people, it’s long term.”
Benefits
Patients using neurofeedback can make significant progress in learning how to maintain their attention, reducing hyperactivity, increasing adaptability to change, improving organizational skills as well as many other areas symptomatic of ADD and ADHD.
Training can work for patients even while on medication. Several studies have shown that about 80 percent of trainees may reduce or eliminate the need for medication. The improved calmness and focus can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours after a training session.
The home option allows the patient to train for four to five days a week. The goal is for a patient to be able to complete 40, 30-minute sessions over the span of two months.
These improvements tend to start increasing and lasting throughout the day after 10 to 20 sessions.
