Common Knee Conditions
These injuries can happen during routine activities at work, home or school, as well as during sporting events or athletic training.
ACL INJURY
An anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a tear in one of the knee ligaments that joins the upper leg bone with the lower leg bone. The ACL keeps the knee stable.
PCL INJURY
The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is a ligament within the knee. The PCL — similar to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) — connects the thigh bone to the shin bone.
MENISCAL TEAR
The meniscus is a rubbery, C-shaped disc that cushions your knee. Each knee has two menisci — one at the outer edge of the knee and one at the inner edge. The menisci keep the knee steady by balancing weight across it.
Knee Arthritis
Another common reason for knee complaints is knee arthritis. Osteoarthritis of the knee, the most common type of arthritis affecting this joint, is usually a byproduct of the aging process. Rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic arthritis can also affect the knee joint.
Regardless of the type of arthritis a patient exhibits, the end result is that the cartilage in the knee joint becomes worn which creates inflammation, pain, and immobility. Once medication and non-operative therapies have been exhausted, patients may want to explore knee replacement surgery for the affected knee.
