The Visian ICL, or implantable collamer lens, is an artificial lens your surgeon can implant inside your eye to improve your vision.

The Visian ICL is an alternative to corneal refractive surgery such as LASIK and PRK.

What is the Visian ICL?

The Visian ICL is a refractive lens, also known as a phakic IOL. IOL means intraocular lens, or a lens inserted within the eye. “Phakic” means that the lens is inserted in front of your eye’s natural lens rather than replacing it.

The ICL is implanted into the posterior chamber, an area behind the iris and in front of your eye’s natural crystalline lens.

Am I a candidate for ICL surgery?

The best candidates for the Visian ICL are between the ages of 21 and 45, with moderate to severe nearsightedness. It is best if the candidate has not had any previous ophthalmic surgery and does not have a history of ophthalmic disease such as glaucoma, iritis, or diabetic retinopathy.

The Visian ICL offers another option for those seeking reduced dependence on glasses and contact lenses. Individuals who are not candidates for LASIK may still be candidates for ICL surgery.

The ICL does not help presbyopia, i.e., the need for reading glasses due to age.

What happens during ICL surgery?

ICL surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, which means that patients do not need to stay overnight at a hospital. Please note that someone will have to drive the patient to and from surgery.

During the surgery, a topical or local anesthetic is administered. Most patients report very little discomfort or pain associated with the surgery. After the procedure, your doctor may prescribe drops or oral medication. You will need to schedule a follow-up appointment the day after surgery.

ICLs are intended to remain in place without maintenance. If necessary, they can be removed by a trained ophthalmic surgeon.

Experience like no other in Georgia

Dr. Paul Harton was the first surgeon in Georgia to implant the FDA approved Visian ICL. Since that time, hundreds of patients have benefitted from this remarkable technology.

Dr. Harton performs the Visian ICL procedure in Rome at The Surgery Center of Rome on the campus of Redmond Regional Medical Center.
