Refractive Lens Exchange, or RLE, is a type of lens implant surgery that can help people achieve better vision. RLE is also known as lens replacement surgery or clear lens extraction.

RLE is an alternative to LASIK, PRK, and other refractive surgeries.

What happens during RLE?

During RLE, the surgeon removes the patient’s natural lens from the eye. The surgeon then implants something known as an intraocular lens, or IOL. This artificial lens makes it easier for the patient to see the world around them.

RLE is very similar to cataract surgery. In cataract surgery, the patient’s natural lens is cloudy and needs to be removed. In RLE, the natural lens is healthy but can be replaced to improve vision.

Since the natural lens material does not grow back, patients who undergo RLE surgery will not experience cataract development as they get older.

How does RLE work?

RLE reduces the need for corrective eyewear by changing the power of the lens inside the eye, thus providing patients with better uncorrected distance vision.

RLE can be a great alternative to corneal refractive surgery procedures such as LASIK and PRK, particularly for older patients who are farsighted. Additionally, it can be combined with LASIK or PRK to give very precise results.

The procedure is done on an outpatient basis, and patients generally can return to normal activities within a day or two.
