Refractive Surgery

The term refractive surgery is a generic term for any eye surgery that aims to reduce the need for corrective lenses, i.e. glasses or contact lenses. People who benefit from refractive surgery have something known as a “refractive error.”

Types of refractive errors include:

• Nearsightedness (myopia) — can see near but not far
• Farsightedness (hyperopia) — can see far better than near
• Astigmatism – blurred at all distances, can occur in combination with myopia or hyperopia
• Presbyopia – an age-related form of farsightedness

At Harbin Clinic Eye Center, we offer several different refractive surgery procedures to help our patients reduce their dependence on corrective eyewear for distance viewing.

We offer the following refractive surgeries:

LASIK: Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most popular form of refractive surgery. During LASIK, your doctor will use cool laser energy to reshape the corneal surface of the eye.

PRK: Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is a similar procedure to LASIK. Like LASIK, your doctor will use cool laser energy to reshape your cornea. Some people are better suited for PRK than LASIK due to their eye anatomy.

Visian (ICL): Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL) surgery involves implanting a small, artificial lens in front of the natural lens in the eye. This secondary lens allows you to see the world more clearly.

RLE: Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) is a lens implant surgery that involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with a lens that better suits your vision. RLE is particularly beneficial for older patients.
