What is LASIK?

How does the LASIK procedure work?

LASIK is a two-step procedure.

First, your surgeon will use a small, surgical tool known as a microkeratome to create a flap in the cornea. In bladeless LASIK, this flap will be created with a femtosecond laser.

The flap is then lifted, and a second type of laser, an excimer laser, is used to reshape the cornea and correct vision.

Lasers used in LASIK are “cool beam” lasers and do not burn tissue. Instead, these computer-controlled lasers gently alter corneal tissue based on measurements obtained in a pre-operative consultation. Once the desired correction is reached, the flap is replaced, and the procedure is complete.

How much does LASIK cost?

There are many factors that affect the overall cost of laser eye surgery like LASIK.

Surgeons who have been performing laser eye surgery longer may charge more for their services due to their increased experience and expertise with a variety of different vision correction procedures. Older, standard laser treatments cost less than the newer customized or optimized laser technologies. Finally, the amenities included in your laser eye surgery package also have a large impact on the cost of the procedure. Some packages may include post-operative check-ups, after-hours access to the surgeon, and enhancements, while others may only offer the price for the surgery itself.

Does insurance cover LASIK?

Normally insurance does not cover the cost of laser eye surgery. However, some insurance companies offer reduced rates depending on memberships and other group associations, like military or AAA holders.

What about HSAs and FSAs?

In most instances, the cost of laser eye surgery can be covered through health spending accounts. We recommend double checking with your insurance provider.

Other ways to afford LASIK

In addition to membership rates and health spending accounts, there are several other pathways to affording LASIK. The cost can be divided into monthly payments through financing from the Harbin Clinic Eye Center.
