Some common reasons patients seek out an ENT specialist for their children are:
Tonsils & Adenoids
Enlarged or recurrently infected tonsils can become a problem for children and adults alike. In some cases, there are even some individuals whose tonsils have become so chronically infected they form foul-smelling rocks (tonsilliths or tonsillithiasis) that can contribute to chronic bad breath (halitosis). Similar to tonsils, adenoids are known in the medical literature as “pharyngeal tonsils.” However, an important distinction relates to their location and the medical problems they can cause.
You should see your doctor when you or your child experience the common symptoms of infected or enlarged tonsils or adenoids.
Ear Infections
These types of infections are common in infants and children because the eustachian tubes are easily clogged. Ear infections can also occur in adults, although they are less common than in children.
Anything that causes the eustachian tubes to become swollen or blocked makes more fluid build up in the middle ear behind the eardrum.
Ear Tubes
Ear tubes are often recommended for children who have persistent fluid buildup behind the eardrum, especially if the condition causes hearing loss and affects speech development. Your child’s doctor may also recommend ear tubes if your child gets frequent ear infections.
Most ear tubes fall out within six to 12 months, and the holes heal shut on their own. Some tubes need to be removed, and some holes may need to be closed surgically.
Tongue Tie
This is a malformation that restricts the movement of the tongue and causes a speech impediment.
ALLERGIC RHINITIS
Rhinitis is inflammation of the mucous membrane of the nose caused by an allergic reaction.
