Eye Procedures

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is a type of procedure that repairs droopy eyelids by removing excess skin and fat from the eyelids.

As people age, the eyelids stretch, and the muscles weaken, resulting in additional fat gathering around the eyes. This can cause sagging eyebrows and droopy upper lids.

Excess upper eyelid skin and fat can create heavy-looking eyes, puffiness and an aged appearance. For those with severe sagging skin around the eyes, vision can be impaired around the side of the eyes (peripheral vision) and the upper field of vision. Upper blepharoplasty is performed to reduce or eliminate these vision problems and enhance the appearance of the eyes, making the patient’s eyes look younger and more alert.

Collaboration with Moh’s Dermatologist

Moh’s surgery is an in-office procedure for removing most types of skin cancers, such as basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas. This is done by a specially trained dermatologist who removes the smallest amount of tissue necessary. It is a great technique to both remove the cancer and take as little normal tissue as possible. Otolaryngologist Dr. Brandon Miller works with the Moh’s dermatologist, after the cancer was removed, to reconstruct the wound.  Often this is when the area to reconstruct involves the eyelid or is a large area to reconstruct.

Some patients do not want to have the area reconstructed in the dermatology office and would prefer Dr. Miller to reconstruct the area while they are completely asleep in the operating room.

Repair of Inward-Turning Eyelids

Entropion is when the eyelid begins to fold inward.  This is often due to the eyelid becoming too loose when aging.  When the eyelashes begin to fold inward this can cause significant damage and irritation to the eye.  This damage can lead to infection and affect one’s vision if not adequately treated.  For most cases, the treatment tightens and everts the lid with a minor outpatient surgery.  Patients can be put to sleep for this surgery, but it often only requires local or “twilight” anesthesia.
