Radiation therapy uses targeted energy (X-rays, radioactive substances) to destroy cancer cells, shrink tumors, and/or alleviate certain cancer-related symptoms. It may be used as a primary treatment to destroy cancer cells, in combination with other treatments to stop the growth of cancer cells, before another treatment to shrink a tumor, after another treatment to stop the growth of any remaining cancer cells, or to relieve symptoms of advanced cancer.
Precision Medicine
Harbin Clinic radiation oncologists tailor a personalized treatment plan to attack specific tumors, providing highly effective treatment by protecting healthy organs and tissues and managing side effects.
Types of Radiation
EXTERNAL BEAM RADIATION THERAPY
Radiation is directed from a machine outside the body onto cancerous cells within the body.
INTERNAL RADIATION THERAPY
Radioactive material is placed (via a catheter or other applicator) directly into or near a tumor. Internal radiation is also known as Brachytherapy.
SYSTEMIC RADIATION THERAPY
A radioactive substance (that is swallowed or injected) travels through the blood to locate and destroy cancerous cells.
Personalized Treatment Approach
When you are referred to Harbin Clinic Cancer Center, your case may be presented at our Cancer Treatment Team Meeting where medical experts across many disciplines review your medical history and perform a full diagnostic evaluation to provide you with an individualized treatment plan based on your specific diagnosis.
Our radiation oncologists use advanced imaging technology to plan your treatment and to ensure accuracy. Targeted radiation technologies deliver maximum radiation doses to tumors while protecting healthy tissues and organs.
Managing Radiation Side Effects
Radiation therapy can cause damage to normal tissues and cause unpleasant side effects such as skin changes, fatigue, nausea, and other side effects, depending on the part of your body being treated. We provide a variety of complementary therapies to help prevent or lessen some of the side effects throughout your radiation treatment.
