Men’s Health: Time for a Tune-Up

Just like a car needs regular maintenance to stay in good shape and avoid expensive repairs, our bodies work the same way. Ignoring warning signs or skipping routine checkups may not seem like a big deal in the moment, but over time, it can lead to serious breakdowns. As June is men’s health awareness month, it is a great time to remember that prioritizing health is the key to living longer, generally feeling better daily and being around for future generations.

“It’s not uncommon for some men to delay seeking care,” says Harbin Clinic family medicine physician Dr. John Scott Carroll. “But it can lead to bigger problems down the road. In primary care, we focus on building long-term relationships and offering care that fits each person’s unique needs through the years. So, we like to get to know patients before there are major health concerns.”

What to keep an eye on

Thinking of the body like a high-performance vehicle, some parts need more attention than others. Here are a few key areas to monitor:

  • Heart health (the engine): Heart disease is still the top cause of death for men. Just like an engine needs clean oil and regular checks, the heart needs a healthy diet and regular exercise to keep running strong.
  • Prostate and testicular health: Regular screenings can catch problems. Early detection makes a big difference in treatment success.
  • Mental health (the dashboard): When warning lights pop up on the dashboard, they are there for a reason. Mental health is no different. Issues like stress, anxiety and depression are common and treatable. Ignoring them can lead to bigger issues down the road.

Five habits that keep things running smoothly

Dr. Carroll recommends five key habits for staying healthy:

  • Get regular checkups: Do not wait for something to go wrong. Annual visits help catch small issues before they turn into major health concerns.
  • Fuel up right: Eating plenty of fruits, veggies, whole grains and lean proteins gives the body what it needs to perform well. Cutting back on processed foods and sugar helps too.
  • Stay active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week, plus some strength training. Movement keeps everything—from the heart to the joints—in better shape.
  • Take care of mental health: Practices like mindfulness, meditation or talking to a therapist can make a big difference in how someone feels and functions.
  • Get good sleep: Sleep is when the body recharges. Aim for 7–9 hours a night and try to keep a consistent routine. A quiet, screen-free space helps improve sleep quality.
