Certified Nurse Midwives: Providing Complete Care

Did you know that there are certified nurse midwives (CNMs) available at the Harbin Clinic Women’s Center in both Rome and in Cartersville? CNMs are board-certified practitioners who play an important role on our women’s health team of providers. Though there are important differences between an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) and a certified nurse midwife (CNM), the distinctions are not as apparent as they once were, and they act as partners in care.

Our certified nurse midwives work with a full care team, including OB-GYNs, pediatricians, and with our regional hospital systems where they deliver babies. Studies also show that women who involve a nurse midwife in their prenatal care are less likely to require interventions such as electronic fetal monitoring, epidurals, episiotomies and cesarean sections. This means healthier outcomes for mothers and their babies, and an easier recovery time. Both CNMs and OB-GYNs offer women the same nonsurgical, gynecological, and obstetrical services such as: annual gynecological exams, full-spectrum prenatal care with all tests and screenings, birthing privileges, and postpartum follow-ups. Mothers can also still receive an epidural while seeing a CNM if they choose to do so.

Our midwives have unique training and are excellent at acting as advocates for moms-to-be. They recognize and support personalized methods of care and healing, guided by the best evidence available. CNMs often use deep breathing, massage, visualization, varying a woman’s position during birth, etc. to help women with the natural, yet challenging, task of birth.

When describing CMN care, Harbin Clinic CMN Susan Crisp shared, “As a Certified Nurse Midwife, I have the privilege of helping women by providing emotional support, focusing on prevention and health/wellness during all stages of their lives including pregnancy and birth. And I do so leaning on the excellent care team at the Women’s Center Rome.”

Do you have certain expectations about your birthing plan? Or maybe you have questions about drug intervention during delivery? At Harbin Clinic Women’s Centers of Rome and Cartersville, the women’s healthcare teams have a breadth of knowledge and experience to meet your needs in this exciting season of life.
