Cancer Survivor Rings in Hope and Returns to Give Back

cancer survivor volunteers

Visitors to the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center are often greeted by Garry Fisher, a man known for his warm smile, welcoming presence and boundless energy. Before becoming one of the center’s most dedicated volunteers, Fisher was a patient with an inspiring story.

A surprise diagnosis

Five years ago, Fisher was preparing for a routine shoulder replacement when an MRI revealed a spot on his lungs. With no symptoms or warning signs, the diagnosis came as a complete surprise.

“My doctor told me the shoulder replacement would have to wait, and I started the first of five radiation treatments,” Garry said.

The power of precision in radiation oncology

Fisher underwent stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), a highly targeted form of radiation used to treat early-stage lung cancers. This approach allowed him to avoid surgery and experience minimal side effects.

Harbin Clinic radiation oncologist Dr. J.C. Abdou shared that recent advancements in radiation technology have led to better outcomes and shorter treatment plans for patients like Garry Fisher. But innovation at Harbin Clinic and Atrium Health Floyd goes beyond radiation therapy. Their comprehensive oncology support program — spanning advanced imaging, preventative care and personalized care — ensures every patient receives comfort and guidance throughout their cancer journey.

Personalized care plans

With nearly 20 and 30 years of care experience, Harbin Clinic radiation oncologists Dr. J.C. Abdou and Dr. Matthew Mumber shared that the Cancer Center physician team thoroughly discusses the best treatment for patients, including how they decide whether radiation therapy is right for a situation.

“In cancer care, we consider a variety of factors to determine the best care possible,” Dr. Abdou said. “We start by identifying the type of cancer, its location and whether it has spread. Then, we determine the best treatment options using multidisciplinary input and evidence-based guidelines.”

Dr. Matthew Mumber, another member of the radiation oncology team, emphasized the clinic’s commitment to fully walking alongside patients throughout their care.

“We are dedicated to whole-system care,” added Dr. Mumber. “We meet the needs of the patient at every touchpoint—considering diet, exercise, stress management, caregiver support and more.”

This philosophy guides every aspect of the combined strengths of Harbin Clinic and Atrium Health Floyd. Each patient’s care is distinct and individualized to meet specific needs and long-term goals. The entire journey — from oncology to imaging to treatment — can be navigated through a single, coordinated source, with doctors, nurses and specialists working collaboratively toward the best possible outcomes.

Ringing in hope

Upon completing treatment, Fisher celebrated by ringing final treatment bell—a moment of triumph for many cancer patients.

“The nurses told me to ring it loud,” he said with a smile. “WHAM! I did not disappoint. I actually broke it!”

Now cancer-free, Fisher has become a fixture at the Cancer Center, volunteering five days a week. He assists patients with directions, offers encouragement and shares his experience.

“I would be here all day, every day if they let me,” he said. “I love making people feel welcome and reminding them there are a lot of people here to help. It’s a great team. I have been where they are, so I remind them not to give up.”
