Blood Donor Month: Help Save Lives this January!
January is National Blood Donor Month. Year after year, blood banks face low collection rates and high appointment cancellations, and this is often due to flu season and winter storms. With this in mind, we wanted to share a few important facts about donating blood and how you can donate in your community.
Life-saving blood donation facts:
- Every 2 seconds someone in the US needs blood and/or platelets.
- Each blood donation has the potential to save up to 3 lives.
- Blood and platelets cannot be manufactured; they can only come from volunteer donors.
- According to the American Cancer Society, it was estimated that more than 1.9 million people were expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2023. Many of them will need blood, sometimes daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.
At Harbin Clinic, we partner with Blood Assurance throughout the year to host and share information about their regular blood drives. Blood Assurance is a nonprofit, full-service regional blood center serving healthcare facilities in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, and North Carolina. Their mission is to provide a safe and adequate supply of blood and blood components, in a cost-effective manner, to every area patient in need. More than 540 volunteer blood donors are needed every day to adequately supply the hospitals in these regions.
