Did you know that glaucoma is the leading cause of preventable blindness? Many people with the disease do not experience any symptoms, but it causes permanent loss of vision as a result of damage to the optic nerve. More than 60 million people worldwide, and nearly 3 million people in the United States, are living with glaucoma.
People of all ages are at risk for developing the disease, though it is more common among African Americans, people over the age of 60, and those with a family history. While there is currently no cure, in some cases medication or surgery can help slow the progression of glaucoma if it is detected early enough.
January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, a great time to remind your family and friends to get tested for glaucoma and be diligent about having regular and complete eye exams. Check-ups are vital to retaining good vision and improving overall eye health!
