It’s time to break out your best green garb and get ready to participate in the fifth Harbin Clinic Leprechaun-a-thon 5K and Health Walk. The annual event helps celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a few hundred runners and walkers hitting the streets of downtown Rome on March 19.
Registration for the event is currently open, and anyone interested in participating in the 5K run or two mile health walk can sign up by going to the Rome Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority website at rfpra.com.
Pre-registration costs $25 for the 5K and $20 for the walk. Groups of 10 or more athletes can register for $20 each by visiting the Rome Floyd Parks and Recreation office at One Shorter Avenue.
The 5K race is chip timed with awards going to the top three male and female finishers in each age group, as well as awards going to the overall male and female winner and male and female masters and grandmasters winners.
“What could be more fun than getting to dress up and help celebrate St. Patrick’s Day while also being able to get in some great exercise,” Harbin Clinic CEO Kenna Stock says. “Harbin Clinic promotes a healthy lifestyle, and these events are great places for the community to get outdoors, have fun and get some exercise.”
Pre-registration ends on March 18. Race-day registration costs $30 for either the 5K or the walk. Race packet pickup will be held on March 18 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The race begins in the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center parking lot and finishes on the track at historic Barron Stadium.
All runners and walkers are encouraged to get into the St. Patrick’s Day festivities by donning their best green attire. Those runners and walkers decked out the best will have a chance to win prizes in the costume contest.
Judges will pick winners in several categories, including the Littlest Leprechaun, for those age 12 and under, Most Festive Attire and the Luckiest Leprechaun. The Luckiest Leprechaun should have a red beard, green suit, a most mischievous grin and a great St. Patrick’s Day attitude.
All racers and walkers will receive a Leprechaun-a-thon armband in their race packets that will give discounts and specials from participating downtown businesses and restaurants.
The Leprechaun-a-thon is the first of three races in the 2016 Harbin Clinic Race Series, which also includes the Harbin Clinic Splash Dash on July 4th and the Harbin Clinic Hero Hustle 5K on October 15.
