Harbin Clinic physicians encourage everyone to take steps to get active this spring by taking part in the national Walk With a Doc program aimed at getting people in the community out and healthy.
The free series features monthly walks led by a Harbin Clinic physician where participants can not only get some great exercise but also have a chance to talk to a physician.
The first event kicks off on Saturday, April 15 at Bridgepoint Plaza just off Second Avenue in Rome at 9 a.m.
The American Heart Association says one of the best ways to get started walking is to walk with a group. Walking is a low-cost, easy way to get some great exercise. It doesn’t require special clothes, equipment or membership to a gym or club.
“I’m writing a prescription for everyone to go outside and get moving,” Dr. Beauchamp says. “This event allows us to exercise together and talk about various health interests.”
Walking offers some great health benefits, including lowering the risk of health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, strengthening bones and muscles, helping burn extra calories and helping improve mood.
“I encourage my patients and their families to come out, enjoy the weather and get some exercise,” Dr. Yaphockun says.
Both doctors recently competed in the Harbin Clinic Leprechaun-a-thon 5K race, showing by example the importance of getting out and being active.
“I aim to get in as much exercise as I can each day. Even if it’s only 10 minutes at a time, it all adds up,” Dr. Beauchamp says.
Harbin Clinic will continue the Walk With a Doc series with events in May and June.
