It’s no secret that stress and anxiety is prevalent among U.S. adults. In fact, the National Institute of Mental Health suggests more than 40 million adults experience anxiety each year. But locals are invited to leave their worries by the wayside at Harbin Clinic’s Walk with a Doc event on September 21st.
The Walk will be led by Psychologist Dr. Jason Dunn, and walkers will gather on the grassy area at Bridgepoint Plaza in Rome at 9 a.m. This free event offers people of all ages the chance to talk with a physician and get first-hand advice about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Dr. Dunn will provide a brief informational session on the correlation between exercise and reducing stress, anxiety and depression before participants walk Kingfisher Trail, a 2-mile path alongside the Etowah River.
“It’s very common for people to experience anxiety and stress, and a lot of my patients deal with the symptoms of depression, as well,” says Dr. Dunn. “There are a ton of medical studies out there that show how light exercise, such as walking for about 30 minutes every day, can reduce anxiety and promote better mental health.”
Dunn adds that walking helps boost endorphins that naturally elevate the mood.
“When we are dealing with our own troubles and worries, going on a walk can help create a safe space for us to cope with some tough feelings or issues we’re working through,” says Dr. Dunn. “I hope people will come out and experience the mind-clearing benefits of walking along with me on September 21st.”
Following the morning of exercise, participants are encouraged to treat themselves to fresh produce and other goods at the Between the Rivers Farmer’s Market located in the parking lot of Bridepoint Plaza.
