In just a few weeks, people will have the opportunity to take steps toward a healthier lifestyle - literally.
The free, monthly community event has drawn a crowd who gather at 9 a.m. on the third Saturday of each month to hear information and facts about health and wellness from Harbin Clinic physicians. Then the group stretches their legs during a 2-mile health walk along the Kingfisher Trail in Downtown Rome.
The health benefits of walking are significant. A study led by American Cancer Society researchers shows that even low levels of walking may help people live longer and can lower the risks of certain forms of cancer, including breast cancer and colon cancer.
The Between the Rivers Farmers Market will be happening at the same time as Walk with a Doc at Bridgepoint Plaza, though the Market takes place in the parking lot and walkers gather in the grass. Walkers are encouraged to visit the market and enjoy fresh produce and other healthy foods.
Parking is available at Heritage Park, just on the other side of the picturesque Robert Redden Footbridge, as well as in the gravel parking lot across the street from Bridgepoint Plaza.
Participants should tune into the weather forecast so they can dress appropriately for the temperature and wear comfortable, durable shoes. In the case of inclement weather, visit Harbin Clinic’s website and Facebook page for updates.
