Dr. Billy Chacko is Feeling the Beat for a Great Cause

For years, Dr. Billy Chacko has been helping the veins of Northwest Georgia keep a steady pulse as a Harbin Clinic vascular physician, so it’s no surprise that he agreed to lend his rhythmic talents to the Cartersville Dances with the Stars event on March 2nd.

Dr. Chacko first joined Harbin Clinic in 1997 as an internal medicine physician. After completing his Vascular Medicine Fellowship in 2013, he became the first vascular medicine specialist in the state, offering comprehensive care for diseases of the vascular system.

Dr. Chacko is happy to be able to contribute to this event for which Harbin Clinic is the title sponsor. Cartersville Dances with the Stars raises money for the Backpack Buddies program and the Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter in Cartersville.

“I have never danced before, and my Cartersville office is responsible for encouraging me to do this,” Chacko chuckled. “I just hope to avoid ending up in the emergency room! This is either extreme bravery or extreme stupidity, but I’m all in for these great causes.”

The Good Neighbor Homeless Shelter provides emergency shelter and physical, emotional and spiritual support to homeless men, women and families. In 2018 they helped more than 600 people find jobs, save money and secure new places to live. Each day, about 70 people are being sheltered through their programs, including nearly 40 children under the age of 18.

The Backpack Buddies program sends backpacks of “kid-friendly” food home with children each weekend who are at high risk to go hungry, otherwise. Through this event, the school homeless liaisons are able to provide school supplies and clothing for homeless children as well as tutoring and counseling services.

“Every holiday season our office sponsors kids who are part of these programs, and some of our patients have children and grandchildren in the school program, so we are very familiar with their needs,” Chacko said.

“The interesting thing about this event is that the dance “professionals” we are working with are really all school teachers who have some dance experience,” added Chacko. “They have first-hand experience with the needs of the kids in their schools.”
