The sting of summer heat is beginning to fade as Harbin Clinic’s Walk With a Doc program journeys into fall. The monthly event ensures everyone in Rome has the opportunity to get outside, hear health and fitness advice from a Harbin Clinic physician and get some exercise.
The next event is set for Saturday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. in Downtown Rome. The walk leaves from Bridgepoint Plaza, follows the Kingfisher Trail and is approximately two miles. People of all fitness levels are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Harbin Clinic Radiation Oncologist Dr. JC Abdou is set to lead the group. Dr. Abdou remains very active, competes in local road races and has also participated in previous Walks With a Doc.
“I tell all of my patients that getting some form of exercise is extremely beneficial to their health and well being,” Dr. Abdou says. “Walking is a great way to get outside and earn some great health benefits.”
The American Heart Association says one of the best ways to get started walking is to walk with a group. Walking is a low-cost, easy way to get some great exercise. It doesn’t require special clothes, equipment or membership to a gym or club.
Walking and other forms of regular exercise can help lower the risk of health problems like high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes, strengthen bones and muscles, help burn extra calories and help improve mood.
“I enjoyed being a part of a couple of previous Walks With a Doc and I’m happy to be helping lead this one,” Dr. Abdou says. “I hope a lot of people come out and enjoy walking Rome’s trails with us on September 16.”
More than 250 people have participated in the previous events and learned great health and fitness tips while enjoying the great outdoors.
