The Danger of Being 'Too Tough' for Tests

June is National Men’s Health month and the perfect time to talk about the importance of men’s healthcare to help men understand how vital medical examinations are for their wellbeing.

Almost everyone has that relative who refuses to go to the doctor’s office until body parts practically fall off – or stop working.  Men often believe that if they feel well, they are well; but feelings aren’t always indicative of good health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men are 80% less likely than women to schedule annual health screenings. In an article published in the Journal of Men’s Health, doctors believe this might contribute to mens’ lower life expectancies and their leading risks for most medical illnesses.

You May Have Probe-a-Phobia

There are several cultural factors that may explain why men don’t visit their doctor for checkups. Some men may not believe they have the time to take off from work to see a physician, and others don’t want to bother their doctor about a minor health issue. Ultimately, if men disregard an aching pain in their chest, or have a hard time breathing, then these ignored symptoms will increase the severity of an illness that could have been detected through health screenings.

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Regular medical exams are a major part of preventative healthcare for conditions like prostate cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes, all of which usually don’t have easily distinguishable symptoms. According to the Men’s Health Network, more than half of premature deaths among men are preventable. The American Psychological Association says that American men are 1.5 times more likely than women to die from cancer and cardiovascular diseases because they don’t seek proactive health screenings. The best way for men to protect their health is through preventative health care and early detection.
