Travel Medicine & Infectious Diseases Services at Harbin Clinic

You have just left for that trip of a lifetime to a remote tropical paradise, mission field, or research station. One of your fellow travelers begins discussing how diarrhea nearly ruined his last trip. He wants to know what medicine you are taking to prevent malaria and what strength of DEET insect repellent you brought with you - Did you get the Yellow Fever vaccine required for crossing into that bordering country? Did you know there had been an outbreak of typhoid fever last year?

Travel to the developing world can be an exciting adventure and a considerable investment. Why not prepare now to reduce your risk of travel related illness?

Services Provided

  • Physician review of a 2-page, in-depth questionnaire completed and returned by the traveler in advance of the appointment.
  • Interview to address individual medical needs such as diabetes, pregnancy, allergies, high altitude climbing, etc.
  • Education on how to avoid traveler's diarrhea, mosquito and water-born illnesses and rabies, as well as information on how to order mosquito nets, insect repellents, water purification systems and other items designed for the tropics.
  • Copy of traveler's health recommendations from the CDC and the Travel Medicine Advisor that include current, detailed health, social and political information about the specific country of destination.
  • Administration of traveler's vaccines in accordance with CDC guidelines and entrance requirements for the destination country (such as Yellow Fever). Vaccines documented on a WHO approved International Certificate of Vaccination card kept with passport.
  • Prescriptions for medications to prevent malaria and treat traveler's diarrhea as appropriate for destination.
  • Tropical strength insect repellants and information on ordering mosquito nets, etc., are also available.

About the Medical Director of the Travel and Tropical Medicine Service:

Dr. John Hostetler, FACP, is a board certified specialist in infectious diseases and internal medicine. Dr. Hostetler was formerly a travel medicine consultant for CARE in Atlanta. He is a member of the International Travel Medicine Society and the International Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. He is a volunteer faculty, Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice, Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. Dr. Hostetler received his infectious diseases training at Stanford University.

  • Hepatitis A Vaccine (Adult) - $85
  • Typhoid Vaccine (Oral or IM) - $70
  • Poliovirus Immunization - $50
  • Yellow Fever Vaccine - $150
  • Tdap Vaccine - $50
  • Immunization Japenese Encephalitis Virus- 3 shots at $135 each or $405 for 3
  • Hepatitis B Vaccine (Adult) - $85

Payment and Insurance

 

Payment is by cash or credit card. Group discounts are available. Insurance carriers do not generally cover these preventative services. Insurance is filed for evaluations of persons returning with travel related illnesses.

Clients are seen by appointment only. Consultation is strongly recommended and is the only way to receive all of the services. New clients wanting only a specific injection must bring a physician's prescription and must sign an informed consent form. The optimal time for consultations is 4-6 weeks in advance of travel.
