About Harbin Clinic Sleep Disorders Center

The Harbin Clinic Sleep Disorders Center is located in the Main Clinic campus in Rome, GA. It can be accessed from the Norht parking lot side entrance or through the Pulmonology Department's waiting room. It is fully equipped to diagnose, treat and educate patients about sleep disorders. Harbin Clinic has the only board certified physicians specializing in sleep disorders in Northwest Georgia. A sleep study is helpful in uncovering many different health issues. Our Sleep Disorders Center provides a comfortable, homelike environment for patients. Patients are asked to follow their normal sleep schedules and are monitored for 6-8 hours in a private "bedroom." Trained sleep technicians record and score the patient's sleep with state-of-the-art sleep diagnostic equipment. A Harbin Clinic physician interprets each study. The Harbin Clinic Sleep Disorders Center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

What is Monitored?

The patient is hooked up with wires that will monitor the brain waves, eye movements, chin muscle tone, heart rate and rhythm, breathing flow and effort, leg movements, position changes and snoring. The stages of sleep, oxygenation during sleep, heart rate and rhythm are important so that the physician will be able to mak a diagnosis for sleep apnea or other sleep related disorders. No drugs are given to make the patient sleep. Most patients are able to sleep with the wires due to the "at home" atmosphere. All rooms have a television for patients to watch and the families are welcome to stay until the patient's sleep study begins.

What You Can Expect

Should you be experiencing any sleep problems, please consult your primary care physician. He or she will then refer you for a consultation with a Sleep Disorders Specialist. The next visit will be an overnight stay at the Harbin Clinic Sleep Disorders Center for a sleep study. The sleep study is considered an outpatient procedure since the stay is less than 24 hours. After the sleep study, your next appointment will be a follow-up visit with the Sleep Disorders Specialist to receive the results of your sleep study and discuss options for treatment. If you do have sleep apnea, another sleep study may be required to determine the appropriate method of treatment.

What are Sleep Disorders?

More than 100 million Americans do not regularly get a good night's sleep. Forty million of these people suffer from sleep disorders.  Many of them don't even recognize their symptoms as indicators of inadequate sleep. Common symptoms of sleep disorders are:

  • Frequent Awakenings
  • Restless, Unrefreshed sleep
  • Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
  • Falling Asleep Uncontrollably
  • Morning Headaches

  • Impotence or Loss of Libido

Common Sleep Disorders

Sleep Apnea- Sleep Apnea is a life-threatening disorder which causes you to stop breathing repeatedly during your sleep.

Insomnia- Insomnia is a persistent inability to initiate or maintain sleep. Insomnia is associated with daytime fatigue and sleepiness. Most of these symptoms can be diagnosed and treated effectively.

Hypersomnia- Hypersomnia is sleeping too much and/or at inappropriate times. Sleep Apnea and Narcolepsy are the chief causes of Hypersomnia.

Narcolepsy- Narcolepsy is a lifelong disorder characterized by uncontrollable sleep attacks during the day and muscle weakness triggered by sudden emotional reactions like laughter or fear. Some Narcolepsy patients experience vivid dreamlike scenes or paralysis upon falling asleep or awakening. This can be improved with medications.

Parasomnia- Parasomnia is indicated by such problems as nightmares, sleepwalking, sleep talking, abnormal movements, chest pain and bedwetting that occur during sleep. These conditions are more common in children and may worsen in adolescents and adults.

Chronic Fatigue- Chronic Fatigue is an ongoing feeling of tiredness, malaise, sleepiness, boredom or depression.

Restless Legs Syndrome- Restless Legs Syndrome is a sensory phenomenon consisting of discomfort in the legs and an irresistible urge to move them. The discomfort is typically difficult to define. Patients use a variety of terms such as creeping, crawling, itching, soreness and sometimes aching to describe it, but rarely call it truly painful.
